Dr. Salami Olawale began university studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria in 1996 and completed his medical degree in 2004. Between January and December 2005, he served as a house officer in the departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics and Obstetrics at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Kaduna, Nigeria. He subsequently worked as a medical officer at Restoration Hospital and Maternity in Kaduna between January and May 2006. He was responsible for the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT program among pregnant women and the National Polio Eradication Program. He subsequently worked as a physician with the Guards Brigade Medical Center in Abuja, Nigeria.
His work with Gede Foundation started in October 2006 when he began as a volunteer medical doctor at the clinical care unit. He was responsible for patients’ assessment and subsequent placement on anti-retrovirals, diagnosis and treatment of AIDS and non-AIDS associated conditions, PMTCT as well as clinical research activities. He became a full-time staff of Gede Foundation on 1st June 2008.
Presently, Dr Salami is the head of the clinical care unit of Gede Foundation. His expertise and keen interest in treatment, management and care of patients provide the leadership that has contributed to the foundation’s growth. He has been actively involved in several capacity-building programs for health workers in Nigeria and has attended several international workshops and conferences on HIV where he presented some of his clinical research. He is a fellow of the European AIDS Clinical Society.
He has published several research papers and is currently involved active clinical research in Gede Foundation. His current area of interest is on HIV drug resistance.
