World
Bank/FACA Grant
The World Bank, through the Federal Capital Territory Action Committee
on AIDS (FACA), awarded a $30,000 grant for Gede Foundation's scholarship
and skills acquisition program in Abuja for thirty (30) regular students
and fifty (50) orphans residing in the Federal Capital Territory.
Full scholarships will be awarded to thirty (30) regular students. It will cover tuition and registration fees, uniforms, textbooks, exercise books, school materials (e.g., school bags, mattresses, mosquito nets, sandals), stipend, and transportation fees.
Recipients of the skills acquisition program will enjoy the following benefits: registration fee, workshop uniforms, training manuals, workshop tools, transportation, and stipend.
Aside from financial support, the recipients of both programs and their schools will enjoy these benefits: (1) psychosocial support, (2) medical examination, and (3) regular advocacy visits from the Foundation to promote healthy lifestyles.
This newly approved grant will be in line with Gede's goal to reduce
the number of out-of-school children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. It will
give a total of 80 children the chance to continue their education,
gain training that will allow them to earn income, help foster their
self confidence, and minimize the impact of stigma and discrimination
caused by having one or both their parents die of AIDS.
Expansion of the Scholarship Program to Other States and One-time
Grants
Based on the promising results of the pilot scholarship project in
Abuja, the Foundation will offer partial scholarship support to more
orphans in representative states throughout Nigeria where HIV/AIDS
is highly prevalent. The Foundation will help pay for either one of
the following: tuition, books, uniform, or nutrition.
In addition, one-time grants will be open to students who will be
taking WAEC examinations to qualify for university admission. Some
students will be given support for WAEC lessons to prepare them for
the examinations.
The expanded scholarship program, to be conducted in collaboration
with partner NGOs in the target areas, aims to reach out to orphans
living in rural and grass root communities. They are more vulnerable
to health problems because they lack basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS.
Giving them access to basic education will provide them with the knowledge
that will help lead healthy lives and facilitate their growth towards
becoming useful members of their communities and their country.
