MEDIA OFFICER (Renewable one year contract)

Rationale for the Position

The Gede Foundation is widely recognised as a leading civil society organisation in Nigeria and internationally, with projects based on peer reviewed research, partnerships and advocacy which bring underserved and stigmatised health burdens ‘out of the shadows’. Gede is seeking to engage a well-qualified and experienced Media Officer to play a catalytic role in ensuring that the Foundation’s media exposure runs parallel with its activities and milestones.   

Key Responsibilities

As a new position in the Foundation, the Media Officer’s tasks include but not limited to the following:

(i)           Drafting of the Foundation’s Publications and Public Relations policy and SOPs in accordance with Gede’s 2016 Business Plan

(ii)         Manage the Foundation’s social media accounts (facebook, twitter, instagram, etc) and website by drafting updates, contents, tweets, media files, blogs and other materials which must be submitted in timely manner for approval and posting

(iii)       Identify appropriate media partners and establish/maintain relationships with them resulting in an increasing amount of press coverage for all Foundation activities

(iv)       Ensure that the Foundation’s activities are given wider coverage in the radio, newspapers and television channels by organizing press conferences (quarterly), attending radio programmes as appropriate; and submission of press releases (per activity) --- as agreed with the Line Manager

(v)         Ensure that the Foundation is registered and represented in different media groups and social networks in the area of mental health

(vi)       Take charge of obtaining consents for media postings

(vii)     Provide M& E support by taking charge of documenting activities through photo, video, reports

Line Manager

The Media Officer reports directly to the Performance Director: Resource Mobilization and Partnership Management.  He/She is also expected to assist the PD: RM/PM in working with partners. 

 Qualifications and Experience

The successful applicant will possess, (i) at least a Bachelor’s degree in the area of Information Technology, Journalism, Communications or other related fields, (ii) excellent computer and English language skills, (iii) ability to write reports and take publishable pictures, (iv) familiarity with in-country media environment, (v) excellent organizational skills, (vi) a working knowledge of mental health issues, (vii) willingness to advocate for stigmatized and underserved health burdens, (viii) at least 2 years working experience (an NGO experience is a plus), preferably the same field, (ix) excellent public relations skills, and (ix) an ability to work as a member of a small team that values a culture of learning.
